Following the formal signing of the MoU on June 8, the Ayushman Bharat scheme (AB PM-JAY) officially rolled out in West Bengal.

The scheme initially covers approximately 1.43 crore families (nearly 6 crore people), including 1.24 crore eligible beneficiary families, 3.06 lakh ASHA and Anganwadi families, and 15.95 lakh senior citizens aged 70 and above, who receive cashless treatment at over 36,000 empanelled hospitals.

The Union government is expected to contribute nearly ₹1,000 crore annually for the implementation of the scheme.

The Government of West Bengal will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Authority on June 8, 2026, in New Delhi to officially implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) in the state. West Bengal will become the 36th State/UT to join the scheme.

Update 2 May 23, 2026

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a ₹3,000 crore Central sanction for public healthcare revamp, including ₹976 crore for the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Beneficiary enrolment has commenced, with plans to migrate six crore Swasthya Sathi cardholders and distribute Ayushman Bharat cards starting July 2026.

An agreement to integrate the state into the Ayushman Arogya Mandir network will be signed in Delhi in the first week of June to cover over one crore migrant workers. Additionally, a transparent recruitment drive will be launched to fill vacant doctor and nurse positions within three months.

Implementation ordered in the first cabinet meeting at Nabanna on May 11, 2026. CM confirmed rollout of Ayushman Bharat and other Central government schemes previously blocked by the TMC government. CM also assured that no existing state social welfare schemes would be discontinued.

Actual beneficiary enrolment and hospital onboarding ongoing — no gazette notification published yet.
