Update 6 May 28, 2026

The West Bengal government has handed over more land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for outposts and fencing, bringing the total cumulative land transferred to 142.79 acres. This builds upon the first-phase transfer of 74.9 acres on May 20, 2026, as part of the cabinet's 45-day commitment to provide 600 acres for border security.

The district-wise cumulative transfer spans nine districts, including Murshidabad (38.8 acres), Jalpaiguri (35.16 acres), Cooch Behar (22.92 acres), Dakshin Dinajpur (20.17 acres), Malda (10.9 acres), Darjeeling (8.81 acres), Uttar Dinajpur (2.84 acres), North 24 Parganas (2.6 acres), and Nadia (0.55 acres).

Update 5 May 20, 2026

The state government has initiated the transfer of a 27-km stretch of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) within two weeks to facilitate long-overdue border fencing. This aims to secure the approximately 600 km of border with Bangladesh that currently remains unfenced, out of the total 2,200 km border.

The state government has initiated the transfer of 120 acres of land in the strategically critical Siliguri 'Chicken Neck' corridor to the Central government. The narrow corridor connects mainland India to the northeastern states and is bordered by Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

While the Central government has not yet officially specified the exact purpose of the transfer, the move is a major development from a national security perspective, potentially paving the way for defense infrastructure, logistics hubs, or security-related projects.
